Handed-down folk costumes

A characteristic feature of the Latvian folk costume tradition is handing them down – folk costumes are passed down from generation to generation. Abroad, Latvian folk costumes also were, and still are, passed along within the local Latvian community, such as among members of dance groups, ensembles and choirs. When folk costumes are passed from one person to another, information about the origin of the costume and its maker is often lost in the process.
